RESUMO

The emissivity of an opal photonic crystal loaded with thermochromic VO2 nanoparticles is studied through optical calculations, highlighting the influence of the structure by comparison with a homogenized model. Parameters are first set to maximize the structure influence on material emissivity. Then, a full study of the influence of the VO2 concentration is made to identify, on one hand, cases with the highest structure impact, and on the other hand, interesting cases for applications such as energy-efficient coatings for buildings, satellites, and camouflage applications.

RESUMO

Considering object identification and recognition as well as human interaction with objects, texture as a surface property plays a crucial role. A deeper understanding of tactile aesthetics can be useful in the applied field such as in product designs that appeal more to our senses and that are more effective in eliciting certain emotional responses from a potential consumer. In the present study, behavioral experiments were performed using unfamiliar custom-made dot pattern stimuli under two complementary questionings. The first question focused on the tactile perceptive attributes related to topographical characteristics of the textures exhibited by the material surfaces. The second question focused on the texture pleasantness related both to the perceptive attributes and to the topographical characteristics of the textures. The perspective of this work opens on complementary fields of research such as neurosciences to determine the brain mechanisms in the processing of the pleasantness of tactile stimuli.

RESUMO

The tactile perception of a surface texture is mediated by factors such as material, topography, and vibrations induced by the sliding contact. In this paper, sensory characterizations are developed together with topographical and tribo-tactile characterizations to relate perceived features with objective measurements of tribological and dynamic signals. Two sets of surface samples are used in this study: the first set is made of a commercial floor covering tiles that aim at counter-typing natural wood flooring, with both a visual and a tactile texture mimicking wood. A second set is custom-made by replicating the first set using a plain purple polyurethane resin. The comparison between tribo-tactile signals and sensory analysis allowed the identification of objective indices for textures with slight topographical differences. Even though the topography of the replicated samples is the same as their corresponding commercial products, the fact that the material is different, induces differences in the contact and vibrational parameters. This in turn modifies the discrimination performances during the sensory experiment. Tactile characteristics collected during sensory procedures are found to be in agreement with objective indices such as friction coefficients and induced vibrations.

RESUMO

Anodizing of aluminum generates a porous alumina layer comprising cylindrical nanopores (300 nm diameter) extending essentially perpendicular to the substrate. The pore distribution over the surface exhibits a short-distance order close to hexagonal arrangement. On the contrary, long-distance order cannot be defined: the arrangement is not periodic. Visual observation of such nanoporous layers shows a reddish specular reflectance consistent with reflectance spectrum measurements. This work is a parametric study aiming at demonstrating that color effects are caused by the presence of disorder illustrated by the deviations from periodicity in terms of nanopore location and nanopore radius. Using the method of Rigorous Coupled Wave Analysis (RCWA), the reflectance spectrum has been simulated. Although our calculations were done using a simple one-dimensional (1D) model, a fair fit with experimental results is found.

RESUMO

Among other uses, latexes are a successful alternative to solvent-borne binders for coatings. Efforts are made to produce hybrid nanostructured latexes containing an acrylic phase and an alkyd phase. However, after the film-forming process, the surfactant used to stabilize these latexes remains in the film, and its location can have a drastic effect on the application properties. Among the processing parameters, the alkyd hydrophobicity can strongly influence this location. This article aims at the imaging of these surfactant molecules in two hybrid latexes with different hydrophobicity level of the alkyd resin. A first part of this paper is dedicated to the understanding of the contrast provided by the surfactant in environmental STEM imaging of latexes. Then, the influence of surfactant-polymer affinity on the surfactant location after film-forming of those hybrid alkyd/acrylate latexes is studied by this technique. It is shown that in the hybrid latex with an alkyd shell (obtained with the most hydrophilic resin), the surfactant molecules tend to remain buried in the alkyd phase. Conversely, in the hybrid latex with an acrylate shell (in the case of the most hydrophobic resin), the surfactant molecules tend to gather into islands like in pure acrylate latex films.
